Indian Treasure on Mount Burdell

13 Aug. 1852 – The Indian chief Camilo Ynitia sold his ranch to the American James Black for $5,200 in Spanish gold coins. He continued to live on the land at Olompali, a few miles North of Novato, California, and he grew his fortune by dealing in cattle and hides. He died later in 1856, some say he was murdered by jealous tribesmen that was working on the ranch, and his gold treasure was never recovered.

The Indian chief’s old adobe ranch house later became the historic Burdell mansion which burned down in 1969. Legend says that Ynitia’s gold cache was buried somewhere on the slopes of Mount Burdell, which rises behind the ranch, possibly in one of the many old rock quarry tunnels that can be found in the region. The ruins of the original Camilo Ynitia ranch house can still be found within the Olompali State Historic Park.
